Context and commentary on verse 12.12

The order here is surprising: is giving up the fruit, the last rung of the ladder, higher even than meditation? The acharyas unfold this seriously. For Shankara ‘practice’ here is practice without discrimination, knowledge is better than that, and meditation joined with knowledge better still. The praise of giving up the fruit here, he says, is meant to show that for one engaged in action who cannot follow the earlier paths, it is a means to the highest good. Madhva says directly: ‘giving up the fruit surpasses meditation’ is praise. Otherwise why would it be told to one who is unable? Sridhara Swami too calls this a praise of giving up the fruit.

Ramanuja unfolds it another way. For him the comparisons here are between stages not yet complete: direct knowledge of the self is better than a harsh practice of remembrance without love, meditation, the means to that knowledge, is better than knowledge not yet attained, and work done giving up the fruit is better than meditation not yet attained. Through such work sins wear away and the mind finds peace at once. On the last words, ‘tyagac chantir anantaram’, Shankara too says that this peace does not wait for some other time.

For life today

‘From giving up comes peace at once.’ The worry over results is the mind’s great burden. For the student who has written the exam and the doctor who has finished an operation alike, the sense ‘I have done my work fully’ brings calm.

Letting go of the fruit does not mean doing the work half-heartedly. Full effort, and a light mind about the result. This is also a way of guarding against burnout and anxiety.
