ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸಮಃ ಶತ್ರೌ ಚ ಮಿತ್ರೇ ಚ ತಥಾ ಮಾನಾಪಮಾನಯೋಃ।
ಶೀತೋಷ್ಣಸುಖದುಃಖೇಷು ಸಮಃ ಸಂಗವಿವರ್ಜಿತಃ ॥ 18 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः।
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥ 18 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಶತ್ರೌ ಚ ಮಿತ್ರೇ ಚ ಸಮಃ (शत्रौ च मित्रे च समः, śatrau ca mitre ca samaḥ) = ಶತ್ರು ಮಿತ್ರರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮನು (even towards foe and friend)
- ತಥಾ ಮಾನಾಪಮಾನಯೋಃ (तथा मानापमानयोः, tathā mānāpamānayoḥ) = ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮಾನ ಅಪಮಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (and likewise in honour and dishonour)
- ಶೀತೋಷ್ಣಸುಖದುಃಖೇಷು ಸಮಃ (शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः, śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ) = ಚಳಿ ಬಿಸಿಲು ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮನು (even in cold and heat, pleasure and pain)

ಶತ್ರು ಮಿತ್ರರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮನಾದ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಮಾನ ಅಪಮಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಚಳಿ ಬಿಸಿಲು ಸುಖ ದುಃಖಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮನಾದ, ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತನಾದ… (ವಾಕ್ಯ ಮುಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Even towards foe and friend, and likewise in honour and dishonour, even in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free from attachment… (the sentence is completed in the next verse).

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ಮಾನ ಅಪಮಾನ’ಕ್ಕೆ ಪೂಜೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಮಾನ ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ, ‘ಸಂಗವಿವರ್ಜಿತ’ಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವನು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ‘ಸಮ’ ಪದವನ್ನು ‘ಏಕರೂಪ’, ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದೇ ಬಗೆಯವನು ಎಂದು ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಹರ್ಷವೂ ವಿಷಾದವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದವನು.
Shankara gives ‘mana and apamana’ the sense of worship and insult, and ‘sangavivarjita’ the sense of one without attachment anywhere. Sridhara Swami unfolds ‘sama’ as ‘ekarupa’, one who stays the same in every situation: without elation and without dejection.
ಹದಿಮೂರನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಅದ್ವೇಷ್ಟಾ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಶತ್ರು ಮಿತ್ರರ ಮಾತು ಏಕೆ? ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಉತ್ತರ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ: ಅಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ವೇಷವಿಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿತ್ತು, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಎದುರಿಗೇ ಇರುವಾಗಲೂ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಸಮವಾಗಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಇದು ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಂದಿನ ಹಂತ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Having said ‘adveshta’ in the thirteenth verse, why speak of foe and friend again here? Ramanuja’s answer is subtle: there the absence of hatred was spoken of, here it is evenness of mind even when they stand right in front of him, a stage beyond that. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಚಳಿ ಬಿಸಿಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮ’ ಎಂಬುದು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಸ್ಥಿರತೆ, ದೇಹದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಲ್ಲ. ಬಿಸಿಗಾಳಿಯ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ನೀರು ಕುಡಿಯುವುದು, ಮಧ್ಯಾಹ್ನದ ಬಿಸಿಲನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವುದು ಅಗತ್ಯ.
‘Even in cold and heat’ is steadiness of mind, not giving up care of the body. On days of heatwave, it is necessary for the elderly to drink enough water and avoid the midday sun.
ಮಾನ ಅಪಮಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮತೆ ಕಷ್ಟ. ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆಗೆ ಉಬ್ಬದೆ, ಟೀಕೆಗೆ ಕುಸಿಯದೆ, ಟೀಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲಿಯಬೇಕಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಅದರ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ.
Evenness in honour and dishonour is hard. Its practice is not to swell at praise, not to collapse at criticism, and to take from criticism only what there is to learn.
