Context and commentary on verse 13.12
How to divide ‘anadimatparam’ is a matter of debate. Shankara reads ‘anadimat param’, and says the suffix ‘mat’ serves to fill the metre. He records that some divide it as ‘anadi matparam’, having me as the highest, and does not accept this: here Brahman is to be taught only by negating every particular, ‘na sat tan nasad uchyate’. Words convey meaning through class, quality, action and relation, and Brahman has none of these, so it cannot be called either being or non-being.
Ramanuja accepts that very division, ‘anadi matparam’. For him the ‘Brahman’ here is the inner self, the nature of the jiva: unborn, and, being the Lord’s body, having him as its highest. It is not ‘sat’, since it is not in the effect state of god, human and so on brought about by karma, and not ‘asat’, since it is not in the causal state. Madhva explains the word ‘anadimat’ itself: without a body that has a beginning, for otherwise ‘anadi’ alone would have sufficed. It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences.

Some truths do not fall into the net of words. ‘Neither being nor non-being’ is the humility of admitting the limits of language.
We cannot fully hold even another’s pain in words. That is why, in assessing pain, doctors take the patient’s own report as the main guide, rather than judging from the outside.
