Context and commentary on verse 13.2

This verse is among the deepest sentences of the chapter, and the acharyas clearly part ways here. Shankara writes on it one of the longest comments in his Gita commentary. According to him the knower of the field, who appears divided by the adjuncts of countless bodies from Brahma down to a blade of grass, is in truth the supreme Lord, free of worldly existence. To the objection that the Lord would then become a being caught in samsara, his answer is: samsara comes from ignorance, like a snake seen in a rope, and it does not touch the Self. Sridhara Swami too recalls the shruti ‘tat tvam asi’ and says the jiva, who appears to be in samsara, is in truth myself, by its aspect of consciousness.

Ramanuja’s sense is different: ‘know him as having me for his Self.’ Since the body is an attribute of the self and cannot exist apart from it, we say in a single phrase ‘I am human’. In the same way the field and its knower are both attributes of the Lord, his body, and so he can speak of them as ‘I’. He cites the shrutis on the inner controller in support. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text. It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

‘In all fields’, in all bodies. Whichever reading we follow, one thing is clear: the awareness within every body deserves respect.

Even with a patient lying in a hospital bed, unable to speak, the reminder that a knower of the field is present there changes the very manner of care. Care is needed even in how we speak in front of them.
