Context and commentary on verse 13.24

Three paths to one goal. Shankara defines meditation: withdrawing the senses such as hearing from their objects such as sound into the mind, and holding the mind one-pointed on the inner awareness, an unbroken flow like a stream of oil. He recalls the Chandogya’s image, ‘the crane meditates as it were, the earth meditates as it were, the mountains meditate as it were’. ‘Sankhya’ for him is the discernment ‘these are the gunas, I am their witness’.

Ramanuja fits the three paths to fitness: those in whom yoga is accomplished see through meditation, those in whom it is not yet accomplished through the yoga of knowledge, which makes the mind fit for yoga, and those not fit for the yoga of knowledge through the yoga of action. For Madhva ‘sankhya’ is knowledge of the Lord’s nature as the Veda teaches it. He quotes the Gaupavana shruti to show that the stages of hearing, knowing and meditating come in different orders for different seekers.

For life today

Not everyone suits the same path. For some, sitting quietly comes easily, for some reading and reflection, for some the work of the hands and service.

The Gita accepts all three. Its lesson is to walk honestly on the path that suits us, without looking down on another’s.
