It is outside and inside beings. It is the unmoving and the moving. Being subtle, it is hard to know. It is far away, and it is near.
Context and commentary on verse 13.15
‘Far and near’ recalls the Isha Upanishad’s ‘tad dure tad v antike’. Many read it as: so far from the ignorant that it is not reached in millions of years, and nearest of all to the wise, being their own Self. Shankara says ‘outside’ and ‘inside’ are said taking the body as the boundary. Is it then absent in between? That is why ‘it is the moving and the unmoving’: what appears in the form of the body is also it, like the snake seen in a rope.
Sridhara Swami’s images are simple: gold inside and outside bangles and earrings, water inside and outside the waves. Ramanuja relates it to the free movement of the released self: it is outside, leaving the body, and inside too, by nature unmoving, and moving when embodied. Being subtle, it is far from those without practice even though it is right here within the body. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
What is near is often not seen. There are families who live in the same house and are far apart in mind, and relationships that stay near across distant towns.
Giving those near us a few minutes of full attention each day, talking with the phone put aside, shortens that distance.
