It shines through the functions of all the senses, yet is devoid of all the senses. It is unattached, yet supports all. It is free of the gunas, yet experiences the gunas.

Context and commentary on verse 13.14

The whole verse is a set of paired paradoxes. Shankara resolves them through the difference between adjunct and true nature: when the senses work it appears to be working too, as in the Brihadaranyaka’s words ‘dhyayativa lelayativa’, as if meditating, as if moving. But in its true nature it has no senses. Sridhara Swami gives two senses: shining in the forms of the senses’ functions, or illumining the senses and their objects. Madhva takes the second sense.

Ramanuja relates it to the state of the self: it can know objects through the senses, and by nature knows all things without senses. Unattached to bodies of gods, humans and the rest, it yet bears them. The gunas such as sattva are not in its nature, yet it experiences them. It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences.

For life today

The eye sees, but what knows ‘I have seen’ is not the eye. When a cataract is removed or a hearing aid is fitted, the sense changes, and the knower remains the same.

As we age the senses grow dull. Rather than hiding it, it is good to have the eyes and ears tested. Elders whose hearing has declined are also at risk of drifting out of conversation into loneliness.
