ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಾಮಪಿ ತಜ್ಜ್ಯೋತಿಸ್ತಮಸಃ ಪರಮುಚ್ಯತೇ।
ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಜ್ಞೇಯಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಗಮ್ಯಂ ಹೃದಿ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಮ್ ॥ 17 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
ज्योतिषामपि तज्ज्योतिस्तमसः परमुच्यते।
ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यं हृदि सर्वस्य विष्ठितम् ॥ 17 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷಾಮ್ ಅಪಿ ತತ್ ಜ್ಯೋತಿಃ (ज्योतिषाम् अपि तत् ज्योतिः, jyotiṣām api tat jyotiḥ) = ಬೆಳಕುಗಳಿಗೂ ಅದು ಬೆಳಕು (it is the light even of lights)
- ತಮಸಃ ಪರಮ್ ಉಚ್ಯತೇ (तमसः परम् उच्यते, tamasaḥ param ucyate) = ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (it is said to be beyond darkness)
- ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಜ್ಞೇಯಂ ಜ್ಞಾನಗಮ್ಯಮ್ (ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं ज्ञानगम्यम्, jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ jñānagamyam) = ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಜ್ಞೇಯ, ಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಸೇರಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು (knowledge, the knowable, the goal of knowledge)
- ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ಹೃದಿ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಮ್ (सर्वस्य हृदि विष्ठितम्, sarvasya hṛdi viṣṭhitam) = ಎಲ್ಲರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದೆ (seated in the heart of all)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಬೆಳಕುಗಳಿಗೂ ಅದು ಬೆಳಕು, ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದು ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಅರಿಯಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು, ಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಸೇರಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು. ಅದು ಎಲ್ಲರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
It is the light even of lights, and is said to be beyond darkness. It is knowledge, the knowable, and the goal reached by knowledge. It is seated in the heart of all.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಶ್ವೇತಾಶ್ವತರದ ‘ಯಾವ ತೇಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತಾನೋ’ ಮಾತನ್ನೂ ಗೀತೆಯದೇ ‘ಯದಾದಿತ್ಯಗತಂ ತೇಜಃ’ (15.12) ಮಾತನ್ನೂ ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಬೆಳಕುಗಳು ಆತ್ಮಚೈತನ್ಯದ ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಬೆಳಗುತ್ತವೆ. ‘ತಮಸ್’ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ. ಒಂದೇ ವಸ್ತು ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಜ್ಞೇಯ, ಜ್ಞಾನಗಮ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಮೂರೂ ಆಗುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರ ಉತ್ತರ: ಅಮಾನಿತ್ವಾದಿ ಗುಣಗಳು ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಅರಿಯಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ಆ ಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಸೇರುವುದೂ ಅದನ್ನೇ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ‘ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಬೆಳಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಚಂದ್ರ ತಾರೆಗಳೂ ಇಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂಬ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಮಾತನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Shankara cites the Shvetashvatara’s ‘that by whose light the sun shines’ and the Gita’s own ‘yad adityagatam tejah’ (15.12): the sun and the other lights shine only by the light of the Self’s awareness. ‘Tamas’ for him is ignorance. How can one thing be knowledge, the knowable and the goal of knowledge? His answer: the qualities from humility onward are knowledge, Brahman is what is to be known, and it is that very Brahman that is reached through that knowledge. Sridhara Swami recalls the Upanishad’s ‘there the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars’.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ: ದೀಪ, ಸೂರ್ಯ, ರತ್ನಗಳ ಬೆಳಕು ಕೇವಲ ಇಂದ್ರಿಯ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷಯದ ನಡುವಿನ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ‘ಬೆಳಗಿಸುವುದು’ ಆತ್ಮದ ಜ್ಞಾನವೇ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ‘ತಮಸ್’ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮಸ್ಥಿತಿಯ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ, ಆತ್ಮ ಅದನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ್ದು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Ramanuja’s explanation is subtle: the light of lamp, sun and jewel only removes the darkness between sense and object. What truly ‘illumines’ is the knowledge of the self. For him ‘tamas’ is prakriti in its subtle state, and the self is beyond it. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಹೃದಿ ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಿಷ್ಠಿತಂ’, ಎಲ್ಲರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ. ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಗೀತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ‘ಹೃದಯ’ ಎಂದರೆ ರಕ್ತವನ್ನು ಪಂಪ್ ಮಾಡುವ ಅಂಗ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಅಂತರಂಗದ ಕೇಂದ್ರ. ಎದೆಬಡಿತದ ಲಯ ಆ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ನೆನಪಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಸಂಕೇತವಾಗಬಹುದು.
‘Hridi sarvasya vishthitam’, in the heart of all. In the Upanishads and the Gita ‘heart’ means not only the organ that pumps blood but the centre of the inner being. The rhythm of the heartbeat can be a lovely reminder of that centre.
ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲೂ ಅದೇ ಬೆಳಕು ಎಂದಾದರೆ, ನಮಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲದವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಗೌರವದ ಒಂದು ಕಿಡಿ ಉಳಿಯಬೇಕು.
If the same light is in everyone’s heart, a spark of respect must remain even for those we do not like.
