Context and commentary on verse 14.3
The acharyas agree that the ‘great Brahman’ here is not the supreme Brahman but prakriti. For Shankara it is my own maya of the three gunas, called ‘great Brahman’ because it is greater than all its effects and because it bears its own modifications. The ‘seed’ placed in it is the seed of Hiranyagarbha’s birth, the resolve that joins the field with its knower. For Ramanuja it is the eightfold non-conscious prakriti of the seventh chapter (7.4), and the seed placed in it is the host of conscious beings.
Madhva’s sense is distinctive: the ‘great Brahman’ is prakriti, which is in three forms, Shri, Bhu and Durga. Uma, Sarasvati and others, he says, quoting the Kashayana shruti, are other beings endowed with a portion of her. Sridhara Swami states the purpose of the verse: prakriti and purusha are the cause of the birth of beings not independently but as subject to the supreme Lord.

The Gita speaks of creation in the image of mother and father. In this is the view that the world is not a machine but a living family that is born and grows.
This view of the earth as mother also grounds care for the environment: we do not drain a mother, we protect her.
