Context and commentary on verse 14.4

The previous verse speaks of the beginning of creation, this one of every birth. Sridhara Swami notes it: not only at the outset of creation, but always, beings are born in this way. Shankara says the ‘wombs’ are all kinds of beings, gods, ancestors, humans, cattle, wild animals and the rest, and the ‘forms’ are bodies in which the limbs have taken shape.

Ramanuja unfolds the father’s part: it is he who joins each conscious being with prakriti according to its karma. Gods, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, humans, cattle, birds and creeping creatures all have one mother and one father. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

If all beings have one father, all are one family. This verse also grounds kindness towards animals.

The hand that feeds a street dog, the hand that sets out water for birds in summer: these are simple forms of this sense of family.
