ಸತ್ತ್ವಾತ್ಸಂಜಾಯತೇ ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ರಜಸೋ ಲೋಭ ಏವ ಚ।

सत्त्वात्सञ्जायते ज्ञानं रजसो लोभ एव च।
प्रमादमोहौ तमसो भवतोऽज्ञानमेव च ॥ 17 ॥

ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

sattvātsañjāyate jñānaṃ rajaso lobha eva ca|
pramādamohau tamaso bhavato’jñānameva ca || 17 ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಸತ್ತ್ವಾತ್ ಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಸಂಜಾಯತೇ (सत्त्वात् ज्ञानं सञ्जायते, sattvāt jñānaṃ sañjāyate) = ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ (from sattva knowledge arises)
ರಜಸಃ ಲೋಭಃ ಏವ ಚ (रजसः लोभः एव च, rajasaḥ lobhaḥ eva ca) = ರಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಲೋಭ (and from rajas greed)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ, ರಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಲೋಭ. ತಮಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಅಜಾಗರೂಕತೆ, ಮೋಹ, ಅಜ್ಞಾನಗಳು ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

From sattva knowledge arises, and from rajas greed. From tamas arise heedlessness and delusion, and ignorance too.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 14.17ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 14.17

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಫಲಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದು ಕಾರಣ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು: ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದರಿಂದ ಸಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ ಕರ್ಮದ ಫಲ ಬೆಳಕಿನಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ಸುಖ, ರಜಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಲೋಭ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದರಿಂದ ಅದರ ಫಲ ದುಃಖ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Sridhara Swami says this gives the reason for the fruits of the previous verse: since knowledge arises from sattva, the fruit of sattvic action is happiness full of light, and since greed arises from rajas, its fruit is pain. Shankara reads the verse plainly.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ತಮಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೂರು ಫಲಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಸರಪಳಿಯಾಗಿ ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಮೊದಲು ಪ್ರಮಾದ, ಅನವಧಾನದಿಂದ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಕರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗುವುದು, ಅದರಿಂದ ಮೋಹ, ತಪ್ಪು ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅಜ್ಞಾನ, ಜ್ಞಾನವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದು. ಸತ್ತ್ವದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಆತ್ಮದ ನಿಜಸ್ವರೂಪದ ನೇರ ಅರಿವು, ರಜಸ್ಸಿನ ಲೋಭ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಾದಿ ಫಲದ ಲೋಭ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.

Ramanuja reads the three fruits of tamas as a chain: first heedlessness, engaging in wrong action through inattention, from that delusion, wrong knowledge, and finally ignorance, the absence of knowledge. The knowledge born of sattva is for him the direct knowledge of the self’s true nature, and the greed of rajas is greed for fruits such as heaven. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಸರಪಳಿ ಅನೇಕ ಅಪಘಾತಗಳ ಕಥೆಯೂ ಹೌದು: ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣದ ಅನವಧಾನ, ತಪ್ಪು ತೀರ್ಮಾನ, ನಂತರ ದೊಡ್ಡ ನಷ್ಟ. ಗಾಡಿ ಓಡಿಸುವಾಗ ಫೋನ್ ನೋಡದಿರುವುದು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಸರಳ ಪಾಠ.

Ramanuja’s chain is also the story of many accidents: a moment’s inattention, a wrong decision, then a great loss. Not looking at the phone while driving is a simple lesson of this verse.

‘ರಜಸೋ ಲೋಭ’. ಆನ್‌ಲೈನ್ ಜೂಜು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಟ್ಟಿಂಗ್ ಆಪ್‌ಗಳು ಈ ಲೋಭವನ್ನೇ ಬಂಡವಾಳ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ. ಜೂಜಿನ ಚಟ ನಿಜವಾದ ಕಾಯಿಲೆ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಮತ್ತು ನೆರವು ಲಭ್ಯ.

‘From rajas, greed.’ Online gambling and betting apps make their capital out of this very greed. Gambling addiction is a real illness, and treatment and help are available for it.
