Context and commentary on verse 14.19
The account of bondage is over and the word on release begins here, says Sridhara Swami. According to Shankara the knower sees that in every state the doers of all actions are the gunas alone, transformed into body, senses and objects, and knows the Self, the witness of the gunas’ workings, as beyond them. Ramanuja also gives the way to it: overpowering rajas and tamas through sattvic food and worship of the Lord without desire for fruit, and settling in the highest sattva.
Madhva gives an important caution here: the sense is that there is no ‘changing doer’ other than the gunas. Otherwise it would contradict the Mundaka shruti that calls the Lord ‘kartaram isham’, the Lord who is the doer. He quotes the Mokshadharma: ‘I am not the doer, nor are you, the doer is he who is ever the Lord.’ It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences.

For life today
When we are hungry, tired or short of sleep, anger comes quickly. Recognising ‘it is my tiredness that is talking now’ is a simple practice of seeing the gunas as the doers.
Recognising this brings the good sense to eat and rest first and have the important conversation afterwards. Many household quarrels are avoided this way.
