Context and commentary on verse 14.22

Light is the work of sattva, activity of rajas, delusion of tamas. Shankara puts it in the language of inner experience: the one beyond the gunas does not hate it, thinking ‘a tamasic state has arisen in me, I have become dull’, and likewise does not long for the light of sattva when it goes. According to Sridhara Swami, though Arjuna had an answer about the one of steady wisdom in the second chapter, he asked again for more detail, so Krishna answers in another way, and the mark in this verse is one known only to oneself.

Madhva’s reading is close to real life: ‘prayah’, for the most part, he does not hate or long. Quoting the Bhallaveya branch of the Samaveda he says: yet one should desire subtle sattva, and if tamas enters, give it up. Even the gods and sages, he says, are not without sattva. According to Ramanuja he does not hate the workings of the gunas that come as the welcome and the unwelcome in things other than the self, nor desire them when they go.

For life today

States of mind come and go like weather. Not scolding ourselves for a dull day, and not pining for a clear day once it has passed: this is inner balance.

Madhva’s word ‘for the most part’ is a comfort: perfection does not come all at once. Being even most of the time is itself a great achievement.
