Context and commentary on verse 14.27
The last verse of the chapter gives the reason for the previous one. The acharyas give different senses to ‘pratishtha’. For Shankara ‘I’ is the inner Self, and Brahman, the supreme Self, abides in it, so it is the ‘ground’ of Brahman. Sridhara Swami’s image is lovely: ‘pratishtha’ means image, I am Brahman in concentrated form, as the disc of the sun is light in concentrated form.
According to Ramanuja, for those who serve him with unswerving devotion he is the ground of three fruits: the immortal nature of the self, ‘eternal dharma’, which is surpassing and everlasting glory, and ‘absolute bliss’, the joy of experiencing him that the knower gains who has seen that ‘Vasudeva is all’ (7.19). Madhva reads ‘Brahman’ here as maya, that is, prakriti: he is the ground even of prakriti. It is not the work of this page to judge between these differences.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
‘Pratishtha’, ground. As a building needs a foundation, life too needs a ground. This chapter invites us to ask what stays unmoved while the gunas rise and fall.
‘Aikantika sukha’, a joy without end. Those who know that outer pleasures come to an end do well to give some time to inner peace: prayer, meditation, a few minutes of silence.
