Context and commentary on verse 2.18

The three adjectives answer three different questions. Nitya means without end in time, anashin means not destructible by any cause, aprameya means not measurable. Shankaracharya defends this as no mere repetition.

Ramanujacharya opens aprameya beautifully: the self is never available as an object that is known; it stands always as the knower. Besides, the command fight appears here for the first time. Commentators warn against reading it as a licence for violence: it says, do not draw back from your duty in a righteous war that has already come.

For life today

That the body has an end is a doctor’s daily knowledge. Medicine that refuses to accept it fills the last days with unnecessary tests and machines.

Once the end is accepted, the question changes. Alongside what more can be done comes another question: how shall these remaining days be spent? The answer to that second question comes from the family, not from the machines.
