Son of Kunti, it is the contacts of the senses with their objects that give cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go and do not last. Bear them, Bharata.

Context and commentary on verse 2.14

Matra means the objects the senses meet, and sparsha their contact. Cold and heat belong to the body; pleasure and pain belong to the mind. Commentators note that the verse places both in one line.

The medicine of this verse lies in the word agamapayinah: coming and going is their nature. Titiksha means bearing them. Many read it not as suppressing feeling but as the capacity to stand until the wave has passed.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

Medicine says much the same about pain. Even severe pain has a rise and a fall. It climbs, stays at its height for a while, and then eases. Knowing that the wave will pass is itself what carries a person through that hour.

But this should not be twisted into a counsel to put up with everything. Silently enduring pain that treatment could relieve is not titiksha. Bearing what remains after everything possible has been done is another matter.
