Context and commentary on verse 2.19

This verse stands very close to the mantra of the Katha Upanishad, hanta chen manyate hantum. It is one clear example of the Gita taking up the essence of the Upanishads.

There is a danger of reading the line as if it said that killing does not matter. Commentators read it strictly as a statement about the nature of the self. Nowhere does the Gita deny the harm done to a body, or the fruit of action. Besides, in the sixteenth chapter Krishna plainly names violence as a mark of the demoniac nature.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

This verse suggests that the same kind of ego hides in both I saved him and I lost him.

For a doctor this is a necessary lesson. When a patient recovers, the credit is not wholly ours. When another slips away, the weight is not wholly ours either. What is in our hands is to do properly what should be done.
