ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನೈನಂ ಛಿಂದಂತಿ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ನೈನಂ ದಹತಿ ಪಾವಕಃ।
ನ ಚೈನಂ ಕ್ಲೇದಯಂತ್ಯಾಪೋ ನ ಶೋಷಯತಿ ಮಾರುತಃ ॥ 23 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः।
न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः ॥ 23 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)
nainaṃ chindanti śastrāṇi nainaṃ dahati pāvakaḥ|
na cainaṃ kledayantyāpo na śoṣayati mārutaḥ || 23 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ನ ಏನಮ್ (न एनम्, na enam) = ಇವನನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲ (this self not)
- ಛಿಂದಂತಿ (छिन्दन्ति, chindanti) = ಕತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ (cut)
- ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ (शस्त्राणि, śastrāṇi) = ಶಸ್ತ್ರಗಳು (weapons)
- ನ ಏನಮ್ (न एनम्, na enam) = ಇವನನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲ (this not)
- ದಹತಿ (दहति, dahati) = ಸುಡುತ್ತದೆ (burns)
- ಪಾವಕಃ (पावकः, pāvakaḥ) = ಬೆಂಕಿ (fire)
- ನ ಚ ಏನಮ್ (न च एनम्, na ca enam) = ಇವನನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ (nor this)
- ಕ್ಲೇದಯಂತಿ (क्लेदयन्ति, kledayanti) = ನೆನೆಸುತ್ತವೆ (wet)
- ಆಪಃ (आपः, āpaḥ) = ನೀರುಗಳು (waters)
- ನ ಶೋಷಯತಿ (न शोषयति, na śoṣayati) = ಒಣಗಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not dry)
- ಮಾರುತಃ (मारुतः, mārutaḥ) = ಗಾಳಿ (the wind)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಇವನನ್ನು ಶಸ್ತ್ರಗಳು ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬೆಂಕಿ ಸುಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ನೀರು ನೆನೆಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಗಾಳಿ ಒಣಗಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Weapons do not cut this self, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and the wind does not dry it.

ನಾಲ್ಕು ಭೂತಗಳು, ನಾಲ್ಕು ಬಗೆಯ ನಾಶ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಆತ್ಮ ನಿರವಯವ, ಅಂದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಲ್ಲ. ಭಾಗಗಳಿಲ್ಲದ್ದನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಗದು, ಒದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಗದು.
Four elements, four kinds of destruction. Shankaracharya gives the reason: the self is partless, and what has no parts cannot be cut or soaked.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ಬೇರೆ ದಾರಿ ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತದೆ: ಆತ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲ ತತ್ತ್ವಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಯಾವುದೂ ಅದನ್ನು ವ್ಯಾಪಿಸಲಾರದು. ವ್ಯಾಪಿಸದೆ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವುದೂ ಸುಡುವುದೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಲ್ಲದೆ ಈ ಸಾಲುಗಳು ದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಅನ್ವಯಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಡಬೇಕು. ದೇಹವನ್ನು ಶಸ್ತ್ರ ಕತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ, ಬೆಂಕಿ ಸುಡುತ್ತದೆ.
Ramanujacharya’s explanation takes another route: the self is subtler than every other principle, so nothing can pervade it; and without pervading it, nothing can cut or burn it. Besides, it should be remembered that these lines do not apply to the body. Weapons do cut the body and fire does burn it.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಬೆಂಕಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡವರು, ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಊರು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡವರು ಮತ್ತೆ ಬದುಕು ಕಟ್ಟುವುದನ್ನು ನಾವು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಸುಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು, ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ.
We have seen people who lost a house to fire and a village to water build their lives again. Much was burnt, but not everything.
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ದೇಹಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗುವ ಹಾನಿಯನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಗಳೆಯುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಗಾಯ ಗಾಯವೇ, ನೋವು ನೋವೇ. ಆದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಏನೋ ಉಳಿದಿರುತ್ತದೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಅದರಿಂದಲೇ ಅವರು ಮತ್ತೆ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ.
This verse does not deny the harm done to a body. A wound is a wound, pain is pain. But something remains in a person who has lost everything, and it is from there that they stand up again.
