Context and commentary on verse 2.20
The shastras speak of six modifications: being born, existing, growing, changing, wasting away and perishing. Shankaracharya shows how this verse denies each of them in turn.
The verse also appears in almost the same form in the Katha Upanishad, a parallel Madhvacharya points out directly. Ramanujacharya adds a fine point: even gods such as Brahma are born at the beginning of a cosmic cycle and end with it. The self has not even that.

For life today
The day of birth and the day of death. We write our lives between two dates, and that is all a gravestone carries.
This verse speaks of something those two dates cannot hold. Whatever our beliefs, when we sit in a house of mourning the same question comes to all of us: what is it that has left this body? The Gita’s answer is in this verse.
