ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ಜೀರ್ಣಾನಿ ಯಥಾ ವಿಹಾಯ ನವಾನಿ ಗೃಹ್ಣಾತಿ ನರೋಽಪರಾಣಿ।
ತಥಾ ಶರೀರಾಣಿ ವಿಹಾಯ ಜೀರ್ಣಾನ್ಯನ್ಯಾನಿ ಸಂಯಾತಿ ನವಾನಿ ದೇಹೀ ॥ 22 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णान्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही ॥ 22 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ (वासांसि, vāsāṃsi) = ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು (garments)
- ಜೀರ್ಣಾನಿ (जीर्णानि, jīrṇāni) = ಹಳೆಯದಾದ (worn out)
- ಯಥಾ (यथा, yathā) = ಹೇಗೆ (as)
- ವಿಹಾಯ (विहाय, vihāya) = ಬಿಟ್ಟು (casting off)
- ನವಾನಿ (नवानि, navāni) = ಹೊಸವನ್ನು (new ones)
- ಗೃಹ್ಣಾತಿ (गृह्णाति, gṛhṇāti) = ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ (takes)
- ನರಃ (नरः, naraḥ) = ಮನುಷ್ಯನು (a person)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಹಳೆಯದಾದ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಹೊಸ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೋ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದೇಹಿಯು ಹಳೆಯದಾದ ದೇಹಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇರೆ ಹೊಸ ದೇಹಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
As a person casts off worn-out garments and takes new ones, so the embodied self casts off worn-out bodies and enters others that are new.

ಗೀತೆಯ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧ ಉಪಮೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ಸರಳ: ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಬದಲಾದರೂ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡವನು ಬದಲಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
This is one of the best known images in the Gita. Shankaracharya’s explanation is simple: the garment changes, and the one who wears it does not.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಸಂದರ್ಭದ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನೂ ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಧರ್ಮಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇಹ ಬಿಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ದೇಹ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಬದಲು ಹರ್ಷಕ್ಕೇ ಕಾರಣವಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ಓದು.
Ramanujacharya adds a sense drawn from the context. Scripture says that those who give up the body in a righteous war receive a better body. So here, he reads, there is ground for gladness rather than grief.
ಉಪಮೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಎಚ್ಚರವನ್ನೂ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಆಯ್ಕೆ, ದೇಹ ಬಿಡುವುದು ಅಲ್ಲ. ಉಪಮೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಆಯ್ಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಾಗುವುದರ ಮತ್ತು ಉಳಿಯುವುದರ ನಡುವಿನ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಈ ತಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೀರ್ಘ ಬರಹವೂ ಇದೆ: ವಾಸಾಂಸಿ ಜೀರ್ಣಾನಿ: ಹಳೆಯ ಅಂಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದವನು.
Commentators also add a caution about the image. Changing clothes is our choice; leaving the body is not. The image is not about choosing but about the difference between what changes and what remains. ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಸಾವಿನ ಮನೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವೂ ಇದೆ. ಸಾವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿತಾಯದ ಬದಲು ಒಂದು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯಾಗಿ ನೋಡುವ ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಅದು ತೆರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
This verse is heard most often in houses of mourning, and there is a reason for that. It opens a way of seeing death as a change rather than an ending.
ಆದರೆ ಈ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಅಳುತ್ತಿರುವವರ ಎದುರು ಬೇಗ ಆಡುವುದು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿರಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದವರು ನಮ್ಮವರು. ಮೊದಲು ಆ ನಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಜಾಗ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು. ತತ್ತ್ವ ಆಮೇಲೆ ಬರಲಿ.
But speaking the line too quickly in front of someone weeping does not help. The garment may have been old, but the one who wore it was ours. First the loss needs room. Let the philosophy come afterwards.
