Context and commentary on verse 2.25
Three words close three doors. Avyakta means not available to the senses, achintya means not available to the mind’s picture, avikarya means not liable to change. Shankaracharya links the three: because it is beyond the senses, it is also beyond thought. He adds the image that the self does not change as milk changes into curd.
Ramanujacharya’s explanation is more direct: the self is not known by the means that know cuttable things, so it does not belong to the class of such things at all. Besides, the first round on the eternity of the self closes with this verse. The conclusion, therefore do not grieve, appears here in full for the first time.

For life today
In our time belief leans on the image. If it shows on the scan it exists, and if it does not show, it does not.
Yet many things in life appear on no report. No machine measures how much pain there is. Nor can a patient’s courage be measured. What cannot be seen is not therefore absent.
