ಜಾತಸ್ಯ ಹಿ ಧ್ರುವೋ ಮೃತ್ಯುರ್ಧ್ರುವಂ ಜನ್ಮ ಮೃತಸ್ಯ ಚ।
ತಸ್ಮಾದಪರಿಹಾರ್ಯೇಽರ್ಥೇ ನ ತ್ವಂ ಶೋಚಿತುಮರ್ಹಸಿ ॥ 27 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च।
तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥ 27 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಜಾತಸ್ಯ (जातस्य, jātasya) = ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನಿಗೆ (for one who is born)
- ಹಿ (हि, hi) = ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ (indeed)
- ಧ್ರುವಃ (ध्रुवः, dhruvaḥ) = ನಿಶ್ಚಿತವಾದದ್ದು (certain)
- ಮೃತ್ಯುಃ (मृत्युः, mṛtyuḥ) = ಸಾವು (death)
- ಧ್ರುವಮ್ (ध्रुवम्, dhruvam) = ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ (certain)
- ಜನ್ಮ (जन्म, janma) = ಹುಟ್ಟು (birth)
- ಮೃತಸ್ಯ (मृतस्य, mṛtasya) = ಸತ್ತವನಿಗೆ (for one who has died)
- ಚ (च, ca) = ಮತ್ತು (and)
- ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ (तस्मात्, tasmāt) = ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ (therefore)
- ಅಪರಿಹಾರ್ಯೇ ಅರ್ಥೇ (अपरिहार्ये अर्थे, aparihārye arthe) = ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗದ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ (over what cannot be avoided)
- ನ ತ್ವಮ್ ಶೋಚಿತುಮ್ ಅರ್ಹಸಿ (न त्वम् शोचितुम् अर्हसि, na tvam śocitum arhasi) = ನೀನು ದುಃಖಿಸುವುದು ತಕ್ಕದ್ದಲ್ಲ (you should not grieve)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವನಿಗೆ ಸಾವು ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ, ಸತ್ತವನಿಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟು ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗದ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀನು ದುಃಖಿಸುವುದು ತಕ್ಕದ್ದಲ್ಲ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
For one who is born, death is certain; for one who has died, birth is certain. Therefore you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತ: ಹುಟ್ಟು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾವು ಒಂದನ್ನೊಂದು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ, ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗದ ವಿಷಯ. ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗದ್ದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಶೋಕ ವ್ಯರ್ಥ.
Shankaracharya’s explanation is brief: birth and death follow one another, so this is a matter that cannot be avoided, and grief over the unavoidable is futile.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದರ್ಶನದ ಚರ್ಚೆಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇರುವುದಕ್ಕೇ ಹುಟ್ಟು ಮತ್ತು ನಾಶ ಎಂಬ ಅವಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಬರುತ್ತವೆ, ಇಲ್ಲದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಲ್ಲ. ದಾರಗಳು ಇದ್ದೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ, ಅವು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿ ಜೋಡಣೆಗೊಂಡಾಗ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಎನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಅವರು ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
Ramanujacharya adds a philosophical discussion here. Birth and destruction are states that come to what exists, not to what does not. He gives the example of threads: the threads are there all along, and when they are arranged in a certain way they are called cloth.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವರೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು.’ ಈ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಬಲ್ಲರು. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲಿಗೆ ಅದು ಬಂದಾಗ ಅದು ಹೊಸ ಸುದ್ದಿಯಂತೆಯೇ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.
Everyone born must go one day. Everyone knows this line. But when it comes to the door of our own house, it arrives like news.
ವೈದ್ಯರ ಕೆಲಸ ಸಾವನ್ನು ತಡೆಯುವುದಲ್ಲ, ಅದನ್ನು ಆದಷ್ಟು ಮುಂದೂಡಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗಿನ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ಬಾಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು. ಇದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡ ದಿನ ವೈದ್ಯರಿಗೂ ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೂ ಮಾತಾಡುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
A doctor’s work is not to prevent death but to postpone it where possible and to make the days until then worth living. On the day that is accepted, talking becomes easier for the doctor and for the family.
