ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 2.34 ಅರ್ಥ: ಅಕೀರ್ತಿಂ ಚಾಪಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ

ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಅರ್ಜುನ ಒಪ್ಪುವ ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಯೋಧನ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಪಕೀರ್ತಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳು. ಒಬ್ಬ ಶಿಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಅವನ ಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಮೇಲೆತ್ತಲು ಅವನ ಪರಿಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಶುರುಮಾಡಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಕ್ರಮ ಇದು ಎಂದು ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Here Krishna speaks on ground that Arjuna already accepts. In a warrior’s world fame and dishonour are large matters. Commentators read this as the method of lifting a pupil by beginning in his own language.

ಇದನ್ನು ಗೀತೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಮಾತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬಾರದು. ಇದೇ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಫಲದ ಆಸೆಯನ್ನೇ ಬಿಡು ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೀರ್ತಿಯೂ ಒಂದು ಫಲವೇ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು, ಮನೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.

This should not be taken as the Gita’s last word. Later in this same chapter Krishna tells him to give up the desire for results, and fame is one such result. So this verse is a step, not the house.

‘ಜನ ಏನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಭಯ ನಮ್ಮ ಅನೇಕ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮದುವೆ, ಕೆಲಸ, ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ, ಎಲ್ಲದರಲ್ಲೂ ಈ ಭಯ ಸೇರಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

The fear of what people will say drives many of our decisions. It enters marriages, careers and even choices about treatment.

ಆ ಭಯ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾದ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಕೊನೆಯ ಅಳತೆಗೋಲಾಗಿಸಿದರೆ, ನಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುವವರು ನಾವಲ್ಲ, ಊರಿನವರ ಮಾತು. ಗೀತೆಯೂ ಈ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

That fear sometimes keeps us on the right road. But if it becomes the final measure, our lives are run not by us but by the town’s talk. The Gita does not stop on this step either.
