devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi || 23 ||
- ತೇಷಾಮ್ ಅಲ್ಪಮೇಧಸಾಮ್ ತತ್ ಫಲಮ್ (तेषाम् अल्पमेधसाम् तत् फलम्, teṣām alpamedhasām tat phalam) = ಅಲ್ಪಬುದ್ಧಿಯುಳ್ಳ ಅವರ ಆ ಫಲ (that fruit of those of small understanding)
- ದೇವಯಜಃ ದೇವಾನ್ ಯಾಂತಿ (देवयजः देवान् यान्ति, devayajaḥ devān yānti) = ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸುವವರು ದೇವತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರುತ್ತಾರೆ (worshippers of the gods go to the gods)

But the fruit for those of small understanding is finite. The worshippers of the gods go to the gods; my devotees come to me.
Context and commentary on verse 7.23
Here the generosity of the last verse gains a limit: the fruit comes, but it runs out. Shankara sees the Lord’s compassion here too: though the effort is the same, they do not come to me for the endless fruit; how sad, is the feeling.
Ramanuja gives the reason. The enjoyments of Indra and the other gods, and their time, are limited, so those who reach them come down with them. But those who do the same acts knowing them as worship of the Lord, and let go of their clinging to limited fruit, reach him and do not return. He quotes the eighth chapter in support, ‘mam upetya tu kaunteya punarjanma na vidyate’ (8.16).
Note that for Ramanuja the difference lies not in the acts but in the understanding behind them. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text, but the line he quoted at the twenty-first verse, ‘for the devotees of Brahma and the rest there is an end’, states the same position.

For life today
The difference between short-term relief and a lasting remedy exists in medicine too. A painkiller eases the pain; finding the cause of the pain is another task. Both have their place.
This verse does not scorn the small fruits. It reminds us not to forget the larger question alongside them.
