Context and commentary on verse 7.27

This is another reason why beings do not know the Lord. ‘Dvandva’ means pairs: heat and cold, pleasure and pain, gain and loss. Liking and aversion arise towards them, and these cloud the intellect.

Shankara offers a sharp argument: a mind in the grip of liking and aversion does not form a true understanding even of outward things. How much harder, then, for knowledge of the inner self to arise.

Ramanuja stresses ‘sarge’, at birth: the tendencies of liking and aversion practised in former births come along at the very moment of birth. Madhva puts it a little differently: desire and the rest arise only once there is a body; before that there was only ignorance.

For life today

Within a few months of birth a baby knows the faces it likes and the tastes it does not. The pair of liking and disliking is among life’s very first lessons.

Even as adults, many decisions pass through only two doors, ‘I like it’ and ‘I don’t’. Stopping a medicine because it tastes bad, or going to another doctor because we did not like what the first one said: these are small forms of this delusion of opposites.
