Context and commentary on verse 7.22
The worship of another deity also bears fruit, but the source of that fruit is one. Shankara puts it this way: the all-knowing Lord, who knows how the fruits of action are to be allotted, himself creates those fruits, and so they are surely obtained.
Shankara also discusses another way of dividing the words. ‘Vihitan hi tan’ could be split as ‘vihitan hitan’, beneficial fruits. But since desires are not truly beneficial to anyone, he says, ‘beneficial’ in that reading could only be a figure of speech.
For Ramanuja this continues the previous verse. Even if the worshipper does not know at the time of worship that Indra and the rest are my body and that their worship is my worship, it is in fact worship of me. So it is I who give him what he desires.

In a hospital the nurse gives the patient the medicine, the doctor prescribed it, and someone else made it. The source of the benefit lies behind many hands.
When we give thanks for help received, we remember only those we saw. This verse speaks, at the spiritual level, of the habit of remembering the unseen hands.
