Context and commentary on verse 9.12
This continues the picture of the deluded from the last verse. The word ‘mogha’, vain, comes three times: hope, action and knowledge are all without fruit. These words are harsh, and we give them here unaltered.
For Shankara, because they disregard the Lord, who is their own Self, even their rites such as the agnihotra bear no fruit. The ‘devilish nature’ is the view that the body is the self, and from it comes the cruel conduct of ‘cut, break, drink, eat, take what is another’s’. For Ramanuja this very nature hides the compassion present in the Lord’s human form. Whatever those who think him like everyone else set out to achieve comes to nothing.
Madhva reads this as the lot of those who hate the Lord, and sets beside it the sixteenth chapter’s verse ‘tan aham dvishatah kruran’ (16.19).

For life today
‘Vain hope’ takes new shapes today: a powder that takes off ten kilos in a week, an oil that cures every disease, miracle treatments that arrive on the phone.
Hope placed in the wrong place takes away money, time and sometimes the chance of proper treatment. Asking a doctor once when we hear of a new cure is a step of good sense.
