Context and commentary on verse 9.27

In the previous verse the offering was limited to a leaf and a flower. Here it spreads over the whole day: doing, eating, sacrifice, giving, austerity. Sridhara Swami says it plainly: there is no need to go looking for special materials for worship. It is enough to offer him the work one is already doing, whether it comes from one’s nature or from scripture. Shankara too explains it as ‘svatah prapta’, work that has come of itself.

Ramanuja unfolds the depth of ‘offering’. In every act, worldly or Vedic, three things are to be handed over to him: the sense of agency, ‘I am the doer’, the sense of enjoyment, ‘I am the one who reaps the fruit’, and the standing of the deity who is worshipped. To reflect with love that the doer, the enjoyer, the worshipper, the deities worshipped and the act of worship all depend on his will: that is offering. Madhva’s note is a single linking word, ‘therefore’: because he accepts what is given with devotion, offer everything to him.

For life today

This verse carries worship out of the shrine room. Cooking, the office file, work in the field, a night shift at the hospital: any of these can be done as an offering.

It is worth noticing that eating is included here. The custom of pausing a moment before a meal to give thanks is a simple form of this spirit. Work done as an offering leaves little room for carelessness, for no one gives half-done work as a gift.
