Context and commentary on verse 9.1
The seventh chapter too opened with ‘jnanam te ‘ham savijnanam’. The same words return here with the adjective ‘guhyatama’, most secret. Madhva states the purpose of this chapter in a single line: here the Lord makes clear what the seventh chapter said.
For Shankara ‘idam’, this, is the knowledge of Brahman, and the word ‘tu’ sets it apart from everything else. He cites ‘vasudevah sarvam’ and ‘ekam evadvitiyam’ to show that this alone is the direct means to liberation. ‘Vijnana’ for him is direct experience, and ‘ashubha’ the bondage of samsara.
For Ramanuja this most secret knowledge is worship in the form of devotion, and ‘vijnana’ is knowledge of the particulars of that worship. He gives a lovely sense to ‘anasuyu’: a mind that hears of the Lord’s boundless greatness and accepts that it may well be so. ‘Ashubha’ is everything that stands in the way of reaching the Lord.

‘I shall tell you, who do not cavil’ is a lesson about the listener too. To a mind that listens only to find fault with the speaker, no good word sinks in.
This holds for a doctor’s advice too. Asking questions is one thing, listening with suspicion already in place is another. Listening with an open mind, and asking plainly where a doubt arises, is half the success of treatment.
