ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 9.31 ಅರ್ಥ: ಕ್ಷಿಪ್ರಂ ಭವತಿ ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮಾ

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ‘ಸಾಧು’ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಹೇಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತರ: ಸರಿಯಾದ ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಬೇಗನೆ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನೂ ಬದಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಧರ್ಮಾತ್ಮ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲೇ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನವನು, ‘ಶಾಂತಿ’ ಎಂದರೆ ನಿತ್ಯವಾದ ಉಪಶಮ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಶಾಂತಿ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನು ಸೇರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾದ ನಡತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರಳದಂತೆ ನಿಂತುಹೋಗುವುದು.

This verse answers how the word ‘good’ in the last verse can stand: a right resolve soon changes conduct too. For Shankara ‘dharmatma’ is one whose mind is settled in dharma, and ‘shanti’ is abiding calm. For Ramanuja ‘lasting peace’ is the ceasing, never to return, of the conduct that stood in the way of reaching the Lord.

‘ಪ್ರತಿಜಾನೀಹಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ವಿಶೇಷವನ್ನು ಆಚಾರ್ಯರು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೃಷ್ಣ ತಾನೇ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡದೆ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಮಾತಿನಲ್ಲಿ: ಕೌಂತೇಯ, ಈ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀನೇ ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ಮಾಡು, ವಿರುದ್ಧ ನಡತೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಬೆರೆತಿರುವ ಭಕ್ತನೂ ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ದೃಶ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಕುತರ್ಕಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಲಾರರು ಎಂದು ಅಳುಕುವ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಡೋಲು ಕಹಳೆಗಳ ಘೋಷದೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಾದಿಗಳ ಸಭೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಕೈಯೆತ್ತಿ ನಿಃಶಂಕವಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಸಾರು.

The teachers note something special in the word ‘pratijanihi’. Krishna does not make the promise himself but asks Arjuna to make it. In Ramanuja’s words: Kaunteya, make the promise yourself on this point, even a devotee in whom contrary conduct is still mixed does not perish. Sridhara Swami paints the scene: to Arjuna, anxious that quarrelsome debaters will not accept this, Krishna says, go to their assembly with the sound of drums and trumpets, raise your arm and proclaim it without fear.

ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಾಮವೇದದ ಶಾಂಡಿಲ್ಯ ಶಾಖೆಯ ಮಾತಿನಂತೆ, ದುಶ್ಚರಿತದಿಂದ ದೂರ ಸರಿಯದವನು ನಿಜವಾದ ಭಕ್ತನಾಗಲಾರ. ಅಂಥವನು ತಾನು ಭಕ್ತನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ದಂಭ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕು. ಹೀಗೆ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಭರವಸೆಯೂ ಇದೆ, ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯೂ ಇದೆ.

Madhva gives an important caution here. As the Shandilya branch of the Sama Veda says, one who does not turn away from misconduct cannot be a true devotee. If such a person claims to be a devotee, it is to be understood as pretence. So this verse holds both a promise and a warning.

ಚಟದಿಂದಲೋ ಹಳೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸದಿಂದಲೋ ಹೊರಬರಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸುವವರು ಒಮ್ಮೊಮ್ಮೆ ಎಡವುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಜಾರಿದರೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಮುಗಿಯಿತು ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಆ ಜಾರುವಿಕೆಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಅಪಾಯಕಾರಿ. ‘ನನ್ನ ಭಕ್ತ ನಾಶವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತೆ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಲ್ಲಲು ಧೈರ್ಯ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Those trying to come out of an addiction or an old habit sometimes stumble. The feeling that one slip means it is all over is more dangerous than the slip itself. The words ‘my devotee never perishes’ give the courage to stand up again.

ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಇದೇ ತತ್ತ್ವ. ಮರುಕಳಿಕೆ ಚೇತರಿಕೆಯ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಾಗ ಕಾಣುವ ಹಂತ, ಸೋಲಿನ ತೀರ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಅಂಥ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವೈದ್ಯರನ್ನೋ ಬೆಂಬಲ ಗುಂಪನ್ನೋ ಮತ್ತೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸುವುದೇ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ.

The same principle holds in treatment. A relapse is a stage often seen on the road to recovery, not a verdict of failure. At such a time the right step is to get back in touch with the doctor or the support group.
