ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 9.9 ಅರ್ಥ: ನ ಚ ಮಾಂ ತಾನಿ ಕರ್ಮಾಣಿ

ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ಇದು ಉತ್ತರ. ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುವವನಿಗೆ ಆ ಕರ್ಮ ಅಂಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಕಾರಣ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ‘ನಾನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಫಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೂ ಬಂಧನ ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣ, ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ರೇಷ್ಮೆಹುಳು ತನ್ನ ಗೂಡಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಮೂಢನು ಕರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಸೇರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

This answers the question raised by the last verse. The work of creating the world again and again does not cling to him who does it. Shankara gives the reason: there is no sense of ‘I am doing’, and no attachment to the fruit. This, he adds, is also why others escape bondage, and without it the deluded man is caught in his actions as the silkworm is caught in its own cocoon.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಹಳೆಯ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ದೇವತೆಗಳು, ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು, ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಎಂಬ ಅಸಮಾನ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿ ಮಾಡಿದ ಭಗವಂತ ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತಿ, ಕರುಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವನು ಅಲ್ಲವೇ? ಅವರ ಉತ್ತರ: ಆ ಅಸಮಾನತೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣ ಜೀವಿಗಳದೇ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕರ್ಮ, ಭಗವಂತ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಉದಾಸೀನನಂತೆ ಇರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ‘ವೈಷಮ್ಯನೈರ್ಘೃಣ್ಯೇ ನ ಸಾಪೇಕ್ಷತ್ವಾತ್’ ಎಂಬ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಸೂತ್ರವನ್ನು ಅವರು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Ramanuja takes up an old objection here: is not the Lord partial and pitiless, having made so unequal a creation of gods, animals and humans? His answer: the cause of that inequality is the beings’ own past karma, and the Lord stands towards it as one indifferent. He cites the Brahma Sutra ‘vaishamya nairghrnye na sapekshatvat’ in support.

ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ವತ್’ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯಕ್ಕೆ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಉದಾಸೀನನಂತೆ, ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ಉದಾಸೀನನಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಕರ್ಮಗಳಿಗೂ ಶಕ್ತಿ ಬರುವುದು ಅವನಿಂದಲೇ. ಕರ್ಮಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಯಮಿಸುವವನನ್ನು ಕರ್ಮ ಹೇಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟೀತು ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ.

Madhva draws attention to the suffix ‘vat’: like one indifferent, not actually indifferent. All actions draw their power from him alone. How could karma bind the one who governs all karma, he asks.

ಪೂರ್ಣ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಫಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳದಿರುವುದು, ಈ ಎರಡೂ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಕರು ತಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲ ಕೌಶಲವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಆದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶದ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ಬದುಕಿನುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಹೊತ್ತು ತಿರುಗಿದರೆ ಮುಂದಿನ ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಸ್ಥಿರ ಕೈ ಉಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

This verse shows that working with a full mind and not clinging to the fruit can go together. Surgeons use all their skill, but if they carry the weight of every outcome through life, no steady hand is left for the next patient.

‘ಉದಾಸೀನನಂತೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪೇಕ್ಷೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಒಳಗೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆ ಇದೆ, ಅಂಟು ಇಲ್ಲ.

‘Like one indifferent’ here is not neglect. There is involvement without the clinging.
