Context and commentary on verse 9.14
This verse describes the worship of the great souls in four acts: singing, striving, bowing and worship. For Shankara ‘yatantah’, striving, is effort through disciplines such as sense restraint, calm, self-control, compassion and non-violence. The bowing is to the Self who dwells in the heart.
Ramanuja’s explanation becomes a living picture here. Remembering the names that tell of the Lord’s qualities, their hair stands on end and their throats choke with joy. They sing ‘Rama, Narayana, Krishna, Vasudeva’ without pause. They engage with firm resolve in works such as worship, praise and the building of temples and gardens. They prostrate full length with all eight limbs, heedless of the dust, mud and pebbles on the ground.

For life today
The word ‘kirtayantah’ recalls our land’s tradition of bhajane and the songs of the Dasas. The bhajane sung together in the village temple builds a community along with devotion.
Loneliness can seriously affect the health of the elderly. Going to a bhajane once a week and singing along becomes a support of the mind for many of them.
