Context and commentary on verse 13.16
Shankara’s image is space: the space in every pot is one, yet appears divided by the pots. In the same way, being seen in each body, it appears divided. In the time of continuance it sustains, at dissolution it devours, at creation it brings forth, as a rope ‘brings forth’ a snake. Sridhara Swami gives the image of the ocean: foam rises from the ocean and dissolves back into it, and is not other than the ocean.
In Ramanuja’s sense this describes the individual self: undivided in all bodies in its single form as knower, and to those who do not know, as if divided into ‘this one is a god, that one a human’. It is ‘the sustainer of beings’ because it sustains the body, ‘the devourer’ because it digests food, and ‘the creator’ because from that it produces new tissues. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
In our own body ‘devouring’ and ‘bringing forth’ go on every moment. The cells lining the gut are renewed within a few days, and red blood cells live about four months.
The parts change, yet the sense of ‘I’ does not. Noticing that steadiness is the meditation this verse offers.
