Context and commentary on verse 14.16
Shankara unfolds this through the principle that the effect matches its cause: the fruit of sattvic action is sattvic, of rajasic action pain, of tamasic action ignorance. Madhva raises a subtle question: if the fruit of rajas were pain alone, would it not be worse even than tamas? So ‘pain’ here means pain mixed with a little pleasure, and he quotes a shruti: ‘from rajas are born pleasure and pain in measure’.
Ramanuja calls ‘sukrita’ action done without desire for fruit, as worship of the Lord. Its fruit is still more sattva, without even a trace of pain. In this way sattva grows sattva. Sridhara Swami takes ‘ahuh’, they say, to mean sages such as Kapila.

Madhva’s ‘pain mixed with a little pleasure’ is familiar. The joy of a thing bought on loan lasts a few days, the pressure of the instalments many.
At the very start of an action one can guess the colour of its fruit. Asking ‘will this make me clearer, wear me out, or dull me?’ is a good habit.
