Context and commentary on verse 16.21
Krishna reduces the long list of the demonic wealth to three words. According to Sridhara Swami, of all the demonic faults described, these three are the root of all. Shankara unfolds ‘destruction of the self’ like this: as soon as one enters this gate, one becomes unfit for any human goal.
Ramanuja calls ‘dvara’ a path, a cause, and the demonic nature itself is the ‘hell’ here. He stresses the word ‘tyajet’: since they cause the most terrible hell, these three should be given up from afar. The same warning about desire and anger came in the third chapter too (3.37). Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
All three begin with the impulse of a moment. When anger rises, stepping away from the place for a while and breathing slowly prevents many disasters.
Alcohol loosens all three gates. Doctors see alcohol behind many incidents of domestic violence.
