ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಯಃ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಧಿಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ ವರ್ತತೇ ಕಾಮಕಾರತಃ।
ನ ಸ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಮವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ನ ಸುಖಂ ನ ಪರಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ ॥ 23 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः।
न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम् ॥ 23 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

na sa siddhimavāpnoti na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim || 23 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಯಃ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಧಿಮ್ ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ (यः शास्त्रविधिम् उत्सृज्य, yaḥ śāstravidhim utsṛjya) = ಯಾರು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು (one who casts aside the injunctions of scripture)
- ಕಾಮಕಾರತಃ ವರ್ತತೇ (कामकारतः वर्तते, kāmakārataḥ vartate) = ಬಯಕೆಯಂತೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೋ (and acts on the impulse of desire)
- ಸಃ ನ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಮ್ ಅವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ (सः न सिद्धिम् अवाप्नोति, saḥ na siddhim avāpnoti) = ಅವನು ಸಿದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not attain perfection)
- ನ ಸುಖಂ ನ ಪರಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ (न सुखं न परां गतिम्, na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim) = ಸುಖವನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಪರಮ ಗತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ (nor happiness, nor the highest goal)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಯಾರು ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ತನ್ನ ಬಯಕೆಯಂತೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೋ ಅವನು ಸಿದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನೂ ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಸುಖವನ್ನೂ ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಪರಮ ಗತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
One who casts aside the injunctions of scripture and acts on the impulse of desire attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the highest goal.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಖರವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ‘ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ’ ವೇದ, ಅದರ ‘ವಿಧಿ’ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡಬಾರದ್ದರ ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾದ ವಿಧಿ ನಿಷೇಧಗಳು. ‘ಸಿದ್ಧಿ’ ಪುರುಷಾರ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ ಯೋಗ್ಯತೆ, ‘ಸುಖ’ ಈ ಲೋಕದ ಸುಖ, ‘ಪರಾ ಗತಿ’ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಅಥವಾ ಮೋಕ್ಷ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಕಾಮಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದೂ ಸ್ವಧರ್ಮದ ಆಚರಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ‘ಸಿದ್ಧಿ’ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತತ್ತ್ವಜ್ಞಾನ, ‘ಸುಖ’ ಉಪಶಮ.
Shankara unfolds the words exactly: ‘shastra’ is the Veda, and its ‘vidhi’ the injunctions and prohibitions that make known what should and should not be done. ‘Siddhi’ is fitness for life’s goals, ‘sukha’ happiness in this world, and ‘the highest goal’ heaven or liberation. Sridhara Swami links it to the previous verse: even giving up desire and the rest does not happen without practising one’s own dharma. For him ‘siddhi’ is knowledge of truth and ‘sukha’ inner calm.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವಿಧಿ’ ವೇದವೆಂಬ ಭಗವಂತನ ಅನುಶಾಸನ, ಅದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಂದವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುವವನು ಪರಲೋಕದ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಯನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ಈ ಲೋಕದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸುಖವನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ಪಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಇನ್ನು ಪರಮ ಗತಿಯ ಮಾತೆಲ್ಲಿ. ಅವರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಅನಾದರವೇ ಈ ನರಕದ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಕಾರಣ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
For Ramanuja ‘the injunction of scripture’ is the Lord’s own command in the form of the Veda, and one who abandons it and acts as he pleases gains neither success in the next world nor even a little happiness in this one, let alone the highest goal. According to him disregard for scripture is the chief cause of this hell. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಕಾಮಕಾರತಃ’, ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಬಂದಂತೆ. ‘ಈಗ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೇನೆ’ ಎಂದು ರಕ್ತದೊತ್ತಡ ಅಥವಾ ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯ ಔಷಧವನ್ನು ತಾವೇ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುವುದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ತಪ್ಪು. ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಬೇಕೆನಿಸಿದರೆ ವೈದ್ಯರೊಡನೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿ.
‘Kamakaratah’, as the mind pleases. Stopping blood pressure or diabetes medicines on one’s own because ‘I feel fine now’ is a common mistake. If a change seems needed, talk to the doctor.
ಶಿಸ್ತು ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯದ ಶತ್ರುವಲ್ಲ. ಸಂಗೀತಗಾರನ ಸ್ವರಾಭ್ಯಾಸ ಅವನ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆಗೆ ಅಡಿಪಾಯವಾಗುವಂತೆ, ನಿಯಮಗಳ ಅರಿವು ಬದುಕಿನ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ದಾರಿ.
