The gods, nourished by sacrifice, will give you the enjoyments you wish. One who enjoys what they have given without offering it back to them is simply a thief.
Context and commentary on verse 3.12
The name the Gita gives the man who breaks the circle is a hard one. Not lazy, not ungrateful, but a thief.
Ramanuja defines theft itself: taking what belongs to another and was set aside for their purpose, treating it as one’s own, and feeding oneself on it. So it is not only that such a man is unfit for liberation; a downward road awaits him.
Sridhara Swami ties it to the five daily offerings: the one who eats without giving to the gods is to be known as a thief. Shankara unpacks him as the man who satisfies nothing but his own body and senses. Madhva wrote no commentary on this verse.

Everything held in common can be read in this verse’s light. Roads, water, a public hospital, a library: somebody built all of them. Using them is not the fault. Using them and returning nothing is what the Gita is naming.
Returning is not always money. Teaching what you were taught, giving some hours back to the place that trained you, making the road easier for those coming behind: these are returns too.
