Context and commentary on verse 3.1

The third chapter opens not with a question but with a protest. In the second chapter Krishna had said that action stands far below buddhi yoga, and had closed with praise of the person of steady wisdom. Sridhara Swami joins the thread: taking hold of exactly that, Arjuna asks why, then, this war.

For Shankara this verse is a pillar. His argument is that if Krishna had meant one and the same person to carry both knowledge and action together, Arjuna’s question could not have arisen at all. Arjuna’s confusion is itself the evidence that he heard two distinct paths.

Ramanuja reads it differently. For him knowledge is the means of seeing the self, and action is what produces that knowledge. His Arjuna is asking: if seeing the self requires the activity of the senses to cease, why send me into a war that is nothing but the activity of the senses? Madhva puts it more plainly still: why send me to war without the path of withdrawal?

Sridhara Swami glosses ghora as ‘made of violence’. Arjuna is not calling the war hard. He is calling it cruel.

This is the anger that rises when the ideal people preach and the work they hand you do not match. Tell someone that sitting with the patient is what matters, then give them seventy patients for the day, and this is the question that forms in their mind.

What is fine in Arjuna is that he does not go quiet. Nodding and walking away is the easy thing. This chapter exists because he said the contradiction out loud.
