ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 3.2 ಅರ್ಥ: ವ್ಯಾಮಿಶ್ರೇಣೇವ ವಾಕ್ಯೇನ

ವ್ಯಾಮಿಶ್ರ ಎಂದರೆ ಬೆರೆತದ್ದು. ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಕರ್ಮದ ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಹೊಗಳಿಕೆ, ಇವೆರಡೂ ಸೇರಿ ಸಂದೇಹ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುವ ಮಾತಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Vyamishra means mixed together. Praise of action in one place, praise of knowledge in another, and the two together make a statement that breeds doubt, as Sridhara Swami explains it.

‘ಇವ’ ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಮೇಲೆ ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರೂ ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳೂ ಗಮನ ಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭಗವಂತ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿಯೇ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಗೊಂದಲ ಇರುವುದು ಕೇಳುವವನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ. ‘ಗೊಂದಲಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತೀಯೆ’ ಅಲ್ಲ, ‘ಗೊಂದಲಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಂತಿದೆ’ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಮಾತು. ಗುರುವನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸದೆ ತನ್ನ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆಯ ಮಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸೌಜನ್ಯ ಅಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

Shankara and Sridhara Swami both draw attention to the little word iva, ‘as it were’. The Lord speaks clearly; the confusion lies in the listener’s mind. Arjuna does not say ‘you bewilder me’ but ‘you seem to bewilder me’. There is a courtesy in that: he admits the limits of his own understanding rather than blaming his teacher.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರೂ ಇದನ್ನೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಇಂದ್ರಿಯವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ನಿಲ್ಲುವುದೇ ಸಾಧನ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿ, ಅದರ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾದ ಕರ್ಮವನ್ನೇ ಮಾಡು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಬರೆದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದಾಖಲಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Ramanuja says the same thing in his own terms: to be told that the stilling of the senses is the means, and then to be told to do the very work that is all sense activity, sounds like a contradiction. Madhva wrote no commentary on this verse, and we record that here as it stands.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೇಳಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೇಳುವವನಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಒಂದು ನಿಲುವು. ‘ಎರಡೂ ದಾರಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅವುಗಳದೇ ಒಳಿತು ಕೆಡುಕುಗಳಿವೆ’ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ನಿಜವಾದರೂ ಅದೊಂದೇ ಉತ್ತರವಾದರೆ ಕೇಳಿದವನು ಮೊದಲಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿಗೇ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

After hearing every possibility, what the person asking needs is not one more possibility but a position. ‘Both roads have their good and their harm’ may be perfectly true, but if that is the whole answer the person who asked ends up back where they started.

ವೈದ್ಯನಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ದಿನವೂ ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆಯ್ಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಬೇಕು, ಅನಿಶ್ಚಿತತೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಚ್ಚಿಡಬಾರದು, ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ‘ನಿಮ್ಮ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನಿದ್ದರೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಆರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೆ, ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇದು’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವುದೇ ಕೇಳಿದವನಿಗೆ ನಿಜವಾದ ಸಹಾಯ.

As physicians we meet this daily. The options must be stated honestly and the uncertainty must not be hidden. But the real help usually comes in the last sentence: if I were in your place I would choose this, and here is why.
