Context and commentary on verse 3.37
The answer to Arjuna’s question is one word: desire. But the verse brings anger in as well, and says the two are one.
Sridhara Swami and Shankara explain how in the same way. Anger is not other than desire. When something obstructs it, that same desire turns into the form of anger. Madhva goes further: even the anger that rises on hearing one’s teacher insulted is rooted in desire, in the wish born of devotion that he not be insulted. He quotes the line that apart from desire, anger and the rest never arise at all.
Sridhara Swami gives a fine reason for two of the epithets, using the picture of statecraft. He is a great eater, so he cannot be settled with a gift. He is a great sinner, utterly fierce, so he cannot be talked round either. One road is left, and the verses that follow name it.
Sridhara Swami notes a hint in ‘born of the quality of rajas’: grow sattva so that rajas wears away, and desire wears away with it.

For life today
That anger is another face of desire is something one can test daily. When anger rises, asking ‘what did I want that I did not get?’ usually produces an answer.
Respect, punctuality, agreement, quiet: one of these was wanted and did not come. Finding the wish takes some of the heat out of the anger.
