Context and commentary on verse 3.27
The word guna can be taken two ways here, and the acharyas divide between them.
For Shankara prakriti is pradhana, the equilibrium of sattva, rajas and tamas, and the gunas are its modifications, the body and the organs. Sridhara Swami and Madhva both say straightforwardly that the gunas here are the senses. Ramanuja reads them as sattva and the rest.
Shankara defines ahankara exactly: the notion that takes the aggregate of body and organs to be ‘I’. Ramanuja says it even more briefly: ahankara is the conceit of ‘I’ in prakriti, which is not the I.
Madhva adds a small, sharp line: there is no action for a reflection. The image in the mirror does not raise its hand.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
‘I did it’ is not false, but it is half the truth. After an operation the praise goes to the surgeon. Yet without the anaesthetist, the nurses, the people who sterilised the instruments, the donors of the blood, and a body that heals, those hands would have achieved nothing.
This verse is not removing responsibility. What it removes is the illusion that everything came from me. Once that goes, there is less swagger in winning and less collapse in losing.
