Context and commentary on verse 3.35
This verse appears twice in the Gita, here and in slightly different words at the forty-seventh verse of the eighteenth chapter.
Sridhara Swami says which question it answers. One’s own duty, the war, is painful and hard to carry out fully; another’s duty, non-injury and the like, is easy; and since both are dharma, why not take the easier one?
Shankara reads it simply: death for one who stands in his own duty is better than life for one who stands in another’s.
Ramanuja’s reading here is distinctive. For him svadharma means karma yoga and paradharma means the yoga of knowledge, for a person still bound up with prakriti. Karma yoga is easy and carries little risk of a slip; the yoga of knowledge is hard and full of it. Even dying in this life without reaching the fruit does not matter, he says, because since no obstacle has accumulated, one can begin karma yoga again undisturbed in the next birth.
At the thirty-first verse of the second chapter we recorded both readings of svadharma, the one framed by varna and the broader modern one. Ramanuja’s reading here belongs to neither; it is a third road.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Another person’s road always looks both cleaner and easier. It looks that way because it is being seen from a distance.
That doing one’s own work imperfectly beats doing someone else’s work well is not a boast. Stumble in your own work and you can get up again. Do another’s well and something inside stays empty.
