Context and commentary on verse 3.16
Sridhara Swami turns the whole wheel once for us. From the Veda comes people’s turning towards action, from that the sacrifice, from that rain, from that food, from that living beings, and from those beings again the turning towards action.
Indriyarama is a lovely word. An arama is a garden, a pleasure ground. Shankara unpacks it as sporting among the objects. Ramanuja sets it against atmarama, one whose delight is the self: for this man the senses themselves have become his gardens.
Shankara closes a section here. His summary of the passage is that until fitness for the standing in self-knowledge arrives, the person who is qualified for action and does not know the self must practise karma yoga. Ramanuja allows exactly one exception: only the one whose seeing of the self depends on no means at all, that is, the liberated, may leave these works unbegun.

For life today
The Gita pricks here at the man who only takes where everyone else is giving. It calls his life not so much wicked as wasted.
Wasted is the harder word. It does not say there was no pleasure in it. It says nothing is left behind. A life of taking only leaves nothing standing when it ends.
