ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ 3.24 ಅರ್ಥ: ಉತ್ಸೀದೇಯುರಿಮೇ ಲೋಕಾ

ಸಂಕರ ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಮೊದಲ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದ ನಲವತ್ತೊಂದನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡಬಾರದು ಎಂಬ ಅವನ ಶೋಕದ ವಾದದ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅದೇ ಪದ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಬಾಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಕೆಲಸ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಏನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಇದನ್ನು ಕರ್ಮಲೋಪದಿಂದ ಬರುವ ವರ್ಣಸಂಕರ ಎಂದು ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕ್ರಮ ಕುಸಿಯುವುದು.

The word sankara appeared in Arjuna’s mouth in the forty-first verse of the first chapter, where it was part of his grief-driven argument against fighting. Here the same word comes in Krishna’s mouth, to say what follows when work is abandoned. Sridhara Swami reads it as the confusion of order that comes from the lapse of duty, that is, the collapse of the social fabric.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ. ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿದವನು ಅವರನ್ನೇ ಕೆಡಿಸುವುದು ‘ಈಶ್ವರನಾದ ನನಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

One line of Shankara’s is worth noticing. He writes that for one who has set out to favour the creatures to be the one who ruins them ‘would not befit me, the Lord’.

ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ಮಾತನ್ನು ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ತಿರುಗಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ‘ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ನೀನೂ, ಶಿಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯವನಾದ ಪಾಂಡುವಿನ ಮಗ, ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನ ತಮ್ಮ. ನೀನು ಜ್ಞಾನನಿಷ್ಠೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದರೆ, ನಿನ್ನ ನಡತೆಯನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸುವ, ತಮ್ಮ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ಯಾವುದೆಂದು ತಿಳಿಯದ ಮುಮುಕ್ಷುಗಳು ಕರ್ಮನಿಷ್ಠೆಯನ್ನೂ ಹಿಡಿಯದೆ ನಾಶವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.’ ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಬರೆದಿಲ್ಲ.

Ramanuja turns the words directly upon Arjuna. ‘So too you, son of Pandu, foremost among the cultured, younger brother of Yudhishthira. If you take to the standing in knowledge, then those seekers who follow your conduct and do not know what they are qualified for will take up neither, and will perish.’ Madhva wrote no commentary on this verse.

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಜಾತಿಯ ಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಥಿಸಲು ಎಳೆಯುವುದು ಸುಲಭ. ಆದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವಾದ ಜಾತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ಮೇಲಿನವನು ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಇಡೀ ಕ್ರಮ ಬಿದ್ದುಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಹೇಳಿಕೆ.

It is easy to drag the picture in this verse into a defence of the caste order. But the argument here is not about caste. It is about responsibility: if the one at the top drops his work, the whole arrangement comes down.

ತಂಡದ ಮೇಲಿನವನು ಕೆಲಸ ಬಿಟ್ಟಾಗ ಮೊದಲು ಕುಸಿಯುವುದು ಕೆಲಸವಲ್ಲ, ನಂಬಿಕೆ. ‘ಇದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕು’ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಸಡಿಲವಾದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಉಳಿದೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಸಡಿಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

When the person at the top of a team stops working, the first thing to collapse is not the work but the belief. Once the sense that this must be done goes slack, everything else goes slack with it.

ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವವರಿಗೆ ದಣಿವೂ ಖಾಸಗಿಯಲ್ಲ. ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಬೇಕಾದಾಗ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು, ಆದರೆ ಕ್ರಮ ನಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.

So for people in positions of responsibility even tiredness is not private. Rest must be taken when it is needed, but taken in a way that keeps the order standing.
