Context and commentary on verse 2.1
The second chapter opens on the closing scene of the first. In verse 1.28 Sanjaya described Arjuna as kripaya paraya avishtah, overcome by deep compassion. The same word returns here, with tears added. Sridhara Swami spells it out simply: one whose eyes are filled with tears and troubled.
Many commentators note that Krishna is called Madhusudana here. They read a hint in the name: the one who killed the asura Madhu is now about to kill the delusion inside Arjuna. Besides, it is worth remembering that the teaching of the Gita begins not from a question but from tears.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

What is our first response when we stand before someone who is weeping? Most of us begin at once to console, or say do not cry.
Krishna had listened for a whole chapter before speaking. Even here, what he sees before he speaks is the tears. The patience to notice the weeping works better than the hurry to console.
