Context and commentary on verse 5.22
There are two reasons here. First, these enjoyments lead to sorrow. Second, they begin and they end. Shankara explains that they begin when a sense meets its object and end when they part, and live only in the moment between.
Shankara’s position here is very severe. Knowing that there is not even a whiff of happiness in samsara, he says, one should draw the senses back from the mirage of sense objects. This is the hardest and most unstoppable enemy of the path to the good, and so it calls for extra effort, he says, bridging to the next verse.
Ramanuja is more measured: these enjoyments end in sorrow, they are short-lived, and one who knows their true nature does not delight in them. Sridhara Swami adds another point: even in the moment of enjoying them, they are shot through with rivalry and envy. For Madhva this is a censure of sensual enjoyment for the sake of renunciation.

For life today
A sweet, one video after another, one more glass. A strange quality of these pleasures is that each time it takes a little more to get the same satisfaction, and when it is over what remains is more wanting. ‘Womb of sorrow’ is close to life today.
But this need not be read as an order to reject the joy of food, music or love. In the sixth chapter the Gita itself calls moderate eating and sleeping a part of yoga. The warning here is about ‘delighting’ in them, that is, looking for the meaning of life in them.
