Context and commentary on verse 5.25
‘Devoted to the good of all beings’ stands out here. In the middle of verses about inner joy comes the good of others. The Gita reminds us here that turning inward is not turning away from the world. The same phrase returns in the twelfth chapter.
Shankara opens ‘devoted to the good of all beings’ as being favourable to all, that is, non-violent. The seers are renunciates of right vision. Sridhara Swami calls them ‘compassionate’.
For Ramanuja ‘whose doubts are cut’ means those freed from pairs such as cold and heat, and they regard the good of all beings as their own. For Madhva ‘dvaidha’ is doubt or error, which is cut by the sword of knowledge when sin is spent. He also suggests the word division ‘ayatatmanah’, those of broad mind, all-knowing, in place of ‘yatatmanah’.

Talk of meditation, silence and inner experience sometimes leads to a self-centred spirituality. This verse gives it a test: has your inner peace increased your care for others?
Those who have found real peace usually become more available to others, not less. Those drowning in their own anxiety have no room left to see anyone else.
