  • ಇಹ ಏವ (इह एव, iha eva) = ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ, ಬದುಕಿರುವಾಗಲೇ (here itself, while still living)
  • ತೈಃ ಸರ್ಗಃ ಜಿತಃ (तैः सर्गः जितः, taiḥ sargaḥ jitaḥ) = ಅವರು ಸಂಸಾರವನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ (they have conquered birth, the round of becoming)
  • ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಹಿ ನಿರ್ದೋಷಮ್ ಸಮಮ್ (ब्रह्म हि निर्दोषम् समम्, brahma hi nirdoṣam samam) = ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ದೋಷರಹಿತವೂ ಸಮವೂ ಆದದ್ದು (for Brahman is flawless and the same in all)
  • ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ತೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಾಃ (तस्मात् ते ब्रह्मणि स्थिताः, tasmāt te brahmaṇi sthitāḥ) = ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮದಲ್ಲೇ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ (therefore they are established in Brahman)

Those whose mind rests in sameness have conquered the round of birth here itself, while still living. Brahman is flawless and the same in all, and so they are established in Brahman.

Context and commentary on verse 5.19

‘Sarga’ means creation, here the round of birth and death. It is conquered not after death but ‘here itself’. The Advaita tradition reads this word as one of the Gita’s grounds for the idea of liberation while living.

Shankara answers the objection of the last verse here. To the deluded, Brahman appears tainted by the faults of the dog-cooker and others, but it is untouched by those faults, and so flawless. Being without qualities, it is not divided by differences of quality either. Gautama’s rule applies to dealings such as honour and gifts, that is, to the world of those who take the body to be themselves. It does not touch those established in Brahman.

For Ramanuja ‘Brahman’ here is the self-substance freed from the fault of contact with prakriti; it is the same everywhere. Those who stand in this sameness of selves have conquered samsara already at the stage of practice, since abiding in Brahman is itself victory over samsara.

Sridhara Swami also explains Gautama’s sutra and says it does not apply to those who have crossed samsara while still living. Madhva simply calls this verse a praise of equal vision.

For life today

We often see liberation as a reward after death. This verse turns it into a question about the state of the mind today.

All of us have felt, at least a little, how light the mind becomes in the moments when comparison, high and low, and the count of who is ahead of me, all stop. If that lightness becomes steady, that is ‘conquered here itself’.
