Context and commentary on verse 5.20
The verbs here are in the mood of instruction: ‘should not exult’, ‘should not be shaken’. But the second line states this as the mark of the knower of Brahman. For the seeker it is practice; for the accomplished, a natural state. According to Madhva, from here to the end of the chapter, renunciation, yoga and knowledge are explained together.
For Shankara the pleasant and the unpleasant produce elation and dejection only in those who see the body as themselves. For one who sees only the self, the pleasant and unpleasant cannot ‘arrive’ at all. Steady understanding is the undoubting understanding that the one, even, flawless self is in all beings.
Ramanuja unpacks the words closely. ‘Steady in understanding’ means one whose understanding rests in the stable self. ‘Undeluded’ means free of the confusion that fuses the unstable body with the stable self. This state comes from knowing Brahman through the teaching of those who know the truth and practising in it. Sridhara Swami calls this the mark of one who has attained Brahman; with the end of delusion, the understanding becomes steady.

For life today
Dancing when a good report comes and collapsing when a bad one comes is only human. But these are two ends of the same swing. The higher we go on one side, the deeper we fall on the other.
This verse is not saying give up happiness. It is saying hold on to the post of the swing. We all know this is easy to say and hard to do. Still, knowing which direction the step lies in is itself a help.
