Context and commentary on verse 5.18
This is among the most quoted verses of the Gita. Sridhara Swami notes that the list is chosen deliberately from two extremes. Between the learned brahmana and the dog-cooker the difference is of conduct; among the cow, the elephant and the dog it is of species. Across such great gaps, the knower sees the one even Brahman.
The word ‘shvapaka’, dog-cooker, may trouble today’s reader. It names the people whom society of that time placed at the very bottom. We have given the meaning of the verse unaltered. But the verse’s weight falls not on that ranking but on the equal vision that sees past it.
Shankara sees the five as a scale of qualities: the sattvic brahmana, the rajasic cow, the tamasic elephant and so on. The Brahman the knower sees is untouched by any of these qualities or their impressions, one and changeless. For Ramanuja the sameness lies in the nature of selves: inequality of form belongs to prakriti, while the self everywhere has knowledge as its form and so is the same. For Madhva, seeing the sameness of the Lord’s forms everywhere is a means to direct knowledge.
Shankara and Sridhara Swami both raise a rule of the Gautama Dharmasutra as an objection here: in honouring and giving, treating equals as unequal or unequals as equal is a fault. The answer comes in the next verse.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
In a hospital emergency room, who is seen first should be decided by how serious the illness is, not by the status, caste or clothes of the person who comes. Codes of medical ethics say the same.
But equal vision does not come from rules alone. It becomes natural when, whoever sits before us, we see in them a life with pain, fear and hope just like ours. The Gita’s name for that way of seeing is wisdom.
